Honduras is home to a growing number of hand made coffees: well crafted, small estates, boutique coffees, regional, micro-brew type. Its climate, soils, altitude and decades of human resource experience result in world-class coffees.

Coffee & Birds

Cafe Miramundo and Macaw Mountain Bird Park & Nature Reserve:
A partnership made for the birds

Bird Friendly Coffee
Café Miramundo has an extraordinary, “bird friendly” commitment. First, our farm mixes areas of shade grown coffee with tracts of forest that will remain undisturbed to maintain both local and migratory bird populations. Since Finca Miramundo includes the entire summit of Mt. Miramundo this natural reserve cannot be encroached upon. According to the Smithsonian Insitution, shade grown coffee plantations are second only to undisturbed forest in the number of bird species encountered, and we intend to incorporate a strong element of eco-tourism and education into the farm’s future.

Macaw Mountain Bird Park & Nature Reserve
Café Miramundo is closely tied to Macaw Mountain Bird Park & Nature Reserve by shared ownership as well as a commitment to both a superior cup of coffee and to tropical birds. Macaw Mountain Bird Park & Nature Reserve is a very special reserve for rescued and endangered birds we have created in an enchanting valley five minutes drive from Copan Ruinas and we strongly encourage you to visit both our coffee farm and the tropical bird reserve.

Macaw Mountain Bird
Reserve History

The reserve grew from a small collection of rescued and donated parrots, macaws, and toucans begun by US bird-lover, Mandy Wagner, on Roatan in Honduras’ Bay Islands. Though a small park was established there, the increase in number of birds (now over 100) required a larger facility. The attractive climate and tourism associated with the famous Maya ruins in the Copan Valley provided a natural solution.

at Macaw Mountain

Macaw Mountain is funded exclusively from admission fees and sales in the restaurant, café, and gift shop. In addition to caring for the birds (some of which may live up to 100 years), Macaw Mountain is an important educational tool for bird conservation in the region. One of our exciting priority projects is a breeding program for the endangered Buffons or Great Green Macaw.

Everybody loves our coffee!

Coffee & Birds
Café Miramundo and Macaw Mountain Bird Reserve are linked by shared ownership and by the coffee itself. The Macaw Mountain property, when purchased, included several acres of abandoned coffee plants of the “tipica” variety. These have been brought back into production and several additional acres of other varieties have been planted simply as an educational experience for visitors.

The economic and social significance of coffee in Honduras, its cultivation and processing, and its relationship to healthy bird populations are addressed.

Café Miramundo is roasted and packaged at Macaw Mountain as the visitors watch; results can be sampled at the park’s streamside café.

We involve guests directly in our coffee process, encouraging sales that directly contribute to Macaw Mountain Bird Reserve’s operating costs.

Café Miramundo is an integral part of Macaw Mountain and both deliver an important message on behalf of birds of the American tropics. For a more complete picture be sure to check out www.macawmountain.com.
